I'm a university student studying in Dunedin, but back in Auckland every summer, and every Christmas, cherries are everywhere. Most of New Zealand's cherries are grown in the South Island, but most of the best fruit gets exported before it ever reaches an Auckland table.
Mr Reds Cherries started as a simple idea: buy directly from the orchards, skip the middlemen, and get genuinely fresh cherries into Auckland homes and offices for Christmas, hand-delivered, not left sitting in a courier depot.
New Zealand orchards lose close to a fifth of their cherry crop every year, not because the fruit's bad, but because it doesn't look perfect enough for export. This season, alongside our gift boxes, we're testing a small batch of rescued cherry powder, made from fruit too imperfect to gift but just as good to eat.
